Best Ways to Connect with “Non-Sports” Guys

What made today stand out for me was the moment I noticed, I’ve been walking around for three months with a VERY STRONG filter.  You know, it’s the “I’m a cool kat, and I just shrug my shoulders and go with the flow so that I don’t stand out”  - filter.  You’ve all done it, mostly when you’re at a new job.

Well, that filter came down for a moment today when one of my co-workers asked me to toss a football around with him.    To be completely honest, all of my close friends back in Houston know that I don’t play sports, neither do I pay any attention to sports of any kind.  I watch the commercials during the Super Bowl.  I only watch the end of the season events: NBA Finals, World Series, and the Summer Olympics. Later that day I realized that I’d been pretty much silent on my sports knowledge and further more, I’ve been silent on how to “connect” with me.  So I came up with my Top Eight best ways to bond / connect with me, a “Non-Sports” Guy.

  1. Muscle Cars (not imports) – I enjoy driving…and looking good while I do it.
  2. Musician (keyboard player) – I’ve been at it since third grade… maybe earlier.
  3. Weightlifting (bodybuilding) – I usually hit the gym 4 – 5 days a week.
  4. Film-making (Mainstream only, not the indie stuff) I like explosions, cars and fights in my movies, and I enjoy shooting great stories that include those three things.
  5. Photography – one of my first loves.
  6. Acting – I recently started back to taking acting classes.
  7. Dancing – I’ve been doing it since I was 3 years old. mostly freestyle (it’s one of the many great ethnic traits that I love about my culture.
  8. Music (new and current pop, hip-hop, house, dubstep, breakbeat, electronica, all 90′s, and plenty of Black Gospel)

Outside of supporting my close family, friends and students who play… I personally don’t ever play, go to, watch, or follow sports.

I’m sure you know a guy or two who share the same feelings. They may be video game guys who don’t follow the sports stats, or band guys who just love their guitars.  Understand that some of these guys might be like me, and some not, but If you just ask… most of us “Non-Sports” guys will let you know that we are “Non-Sports” guys.  It is not that I hate sports…I’m just simply not passionate about it.  Cool?  Alright, back to making motion pictures.

Bethlehem, Oh Bethlehem

A great spoken-word written and directed by Brian Witham.  My favorite concept about this was shooting it in an attic of a gym (High School Gym) during basketball practice.

The only access to this large room was a ladder.  Drew Weeks and I did the majority of the setup and breakdown.  We followed that up with me on camera 1, Brian on my Canon 60D, and Drew on the boom mic.  Marcus read Brian’s script and worked through it… we captured something amazing.  I pulled the edit together in less than a day.
